For many years, vague rumours circulated of a Portishead split. Beth Gibbons worked on an album with Rustin Man, while Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley did production/session work, but nothing much of any great import was communicated to ‘fans’ (bar the odd mailing list announcement every now and then couple of years). Had they split and just forgotten to inform the greater world? Well it seems not. Geoff is posting on myspace and it sounds like they are currently working on a third album. Mind you, the way he is talking, it might be that he has gone bonkers over the last few years and all of this is a grand delusion. (Did Portishead’s domain name lapse?) I guess we will see..
Portishead were certainly never MTV material, but they could quite easily have cranked out a handful of lukewarm albums after all the critical acclaim they received (Mercury etc.). Of course they didn’t, and their legacy has remained fairly strong, even now that the “Trip-Hop” scene is barely recognisable from its Bristol Triangle days.
